NBA Sacramento Kings Jon Brockman highlights camp coaching staff

Kailua-Kona – Hawaii’s local talent from around the state shines at the 2010 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball camp.  Local boys put their talent on display before 6 college coaches/players and NBA Sacramento Kings forward Jon Brockman for a week in Kailua-Kona.

From the very first day, the campers were all anxious to take advantage of such an opportunity before them.  Headlining the coaching staff this year was Sacramento Kings rookie forward Jon Brockman.  Brad Barbarick (Concordia University – Portland, OR), Henry Berrera (Nike S.P.A.R.Q trainer) Brant Minor (Southern Oregon University) Joe Navarro (Concordia, Vancouver Volcanoes) Bill Naylor (Former UH Hilo Vulcan) and Camp Director Andy Smith (Former UH Hilo Vulcan).

The campers were immediately introduced to a college style workout program through Coach Berrera and his Nike SPARQ training workouts.  Learning something new at every step, the campers took in full-court instruction from Coach Barbarick and Coach Navarro.  With mostly group instruction on the first day, the day ended with the players winning the coaches challenge half-court contest.

Day 2 began with the campers drafted into teams and morning workouts beginning at 9am.  Henry Berrera’s SPARQ training helped get the campers ready for the day.  From here, Coach Smith and Brockman began leading instruction into the shooting clinic known as “the workout.”  This is partner shooting with 6 stations focusing on proper shooting technique, release, mid-range catch-and-shoot, catch-and close-out, utilizing screens for an open shot, spot up 3-point shooting and finish with 5 in a row free-throw shooting 2x.

After a short break, Coach Naylor began to teach the fundamentals of team defense.  Campers learned help-side defense, closing out, closing out passing lanes, and overall proper defense.  This defensive clinic greatly helped the campers in the 5-on-5 games throughout the camp.

Coach Brant Minor and Berrera also put on a “next level” passing and ball handling clinic.  With all 54 campers partnering up, they were learning how to have quick hand-eye coordination through their fundamental skills development clinic.

Each evening, Coach Smith and Barbarick hosted a “college-prep” seminar on academic requirements, financial aid available and athletic recruiting.  Each camper received a student-athlete guidebook with helpful college-prep information regarding the seminar they could follow along and ask questions.  Coach Jon Brockman lead a discussion on his transition from high school to college and what expectations incoming freshmen need to be aware of.

On Tuesday morning, our guest speaker was Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi, who gave an inspirational talk on attaining your goals; persevere through adversity; and never give up on your goals.  His motivational speech was perfect for our camp.  Wednesday morning, our guest speaker was Lt. Governor Duke Aiona who encouraged all campers to seek a higher education and always think about making the right decisions in life.  Lt. Governor also presented a proclamation on behalf of the Governor declaring May 31-June 4, 2010 as Hawaii Island Hoops week in the state of Hawaii.

The campers then enjoyed a much needed “fun-in-the-sun” day at Hapuna Beach.  The Polynesian Adventure Tour Bus came by and picked up the campers with their smoothies for a relaxing afternoon.

The campers also participated in 5-on-5 team play, daily free-throw and 3-point contests.  This all lead to the camp tournament on Thursday afternoon with slam dunk contest and all-star game Thursday evening.

Hawaii Island Hoops 5-on-5 championship game was played on Friday, with St. Johns beating Villanova in a close game.  Aaron Fernandez won the free-throw competition and Jake Andrade won the 3-point contest.  Most Improved Player was Mana Daog; Camper of the Week was Thomas Naehu; and Most Valuable Player went to Keala Freitas.

Congrats to all the campers for an outstanding week of camp!!

Hawaii Island Hoops and its coaching staff want to thank everyone who helped make this week a very memorable and enjoyable one.  We look forward to expanding and developing our college-prep camp every year and wish everyone Aloha and best wishes!!
